What is verse writing?

Verse is a form of writing, just like the more detailed prose writing. It is different, however, when it comes to the form of writing. Prose writing is composed of short and/or long paragraphs that involve lots of detail that allow the reader to see what the character sees quite well.

But verse is a poetic format, which is instead written like so:

Cotton candy
tastes
amazing and
wonderful and
sweet.

It is a much shorter way of writing, but it also allows an even better connection — in my opinion — to the main character, because you’re not distracted by miniscule details that might not even matter.

Where do you get your ideas?

Let me explain The Tingle to you, since it is the easiest way to explain how I get my ideas.

“The Tingle” is that feeling you get when ideas begin to form in your head when you look at…people, buildings, the way a tree bends, the sunset during a camping trip….

It doesn’t take much for The Tingle to take effect, but for some people it does. I have found that on those horrid writer’s block days, The Tingle is sometimes forced, which causes paragraphs/lines upon paragraphs/lines to be deleted :/. But, when The Tingle comes without force, sometimes it makes writing a whole lot easier.

So next time you’re driving to the nearest McDonald’s, look around and wait for that tell-tale sign that you have something to write about…

Can I e-mail you my story?

Sure, I wouldn’t mind reading over what you’ve decided to write. Because I don’t have a specific form for this, e-mail this information to katarinaholly (at) gmail (dot) com:

Name:
Website URL: (not required)
Story File: (make it an attachment to the e-mail)
Comments: (not required, but they’re nice :) )

I will be sure to get back to you as soon as I possibly can.

Did you always know you wanted to write?

Yes. From the beginning of first grade, when I was first learning how to form complete and beautiful sentences (-cough-), I knew I wanted to write. Writing has become, these days, a way for me to vent and expose how I feel. Which is why I blog. When I feel the need to rant or expose my feelings on something, anything, I sit down at the computer and blog.

But sometimes I write poems, or work on a WIP story. (WIP=Work In Progress.) This helps me get my mind off things, and if I’m writing a story, I can become my character and live their life, forgetting my own for the 3 hours my eyes are glued to the computer screen. :)

What is your favorite subject in school?

Probably…gym. I know that might sound a little weird, since I like to write, but when we’re running or doing push-ups or playing volleyball, I can let my mind drift to things I might want to write about. Being able to talk to other people and hear about their lives without having to be told to be quiet allows you to discover new ideas…social classes help sometimes :) .

Who are your favorite authors?

Sarah Dessen, Libba Bray, and Becca Fitzpatrick.

There are more, but I think I could write an entire book on my favorite authors xD.

When and where do you write?

I like to write in the privacy of my own room, but sometimes I can’t. So sometimes I’ll write in the kitchen or in the TV room. Anywhere where I can relax and just write is good.
